Overview of Course

Speech-language pathologists play a crucial role in supporting children with complex communication needs (CCN). These children present unique challenges that require experienced professionals to draw upon a range of skills and strategies. This course explores five characteristics common among children with CCN and examines how these attributes impact communication development. Treatment approaches, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), are reviewed with a focus on maintaining high expectations for children and recognizing their inherent competence. By gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse needs of children with CCN, speech-language pathologists can tailor interventions to help each child achieve their full communication potential.
